Perfect Winter Picnic Ideas Perfect Winter Picnic Ideas

As the chill of winter sets in, we're always looking for ways to soak up the sunshine and spend more time outdoors. Whether it’s a beachside brunch, a park catch-up with friends, or a quiet afternoon by the lake, winter picnics are one of our favourite ways to slow down and reconnect with nature.

With a little preparation and the right reusable essentials, you can enjoy a cosy picnic while keeping waste to a minimum. Here are our favourite winter picnic ideas for a more thoughtful outdoor adventure.

1. Choose the Perfect Picnic Spot

Finding the right location can make all the difference for a comfortable winter picnic. Look for places that offer natural beauty with some protection from the wind, like enclosed beaches, bays, lakesides, botanical gardens or your local park.

Picnic tables and sheltered seating can be especially helpful during cooler months. Don’t forget to pack a picnic rug, extra layers and a few outdoor games to make the most of your day outside.

2. Pack Reusable & Eco-Friendly Picnic Essentials

Choosing reusable picnic gear is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste while enjoying the outdoors. Thoughtfully made essentials help keep food fresh, simplify packing and make clean-up easier afterwards.

Our Cooler Bags are crafted from certified organic cotton and lined with LFGB certified PEVA, free from phthalates and heavy metals, so you can carry your food safely and sustainably.

Here are a few picnic essentials we always recommend:

  • Reusable Containers: Opt for glass, stainless steel or silicone containers for snacks, salads and leftovers, like our Stainless Steel Food Containers or Glass Food Containers.
  • Food Flasks: Perfect for keeping soups, pasta or warm meals hot throughout the day, like our Insulated Flask.
  • Chopping Boards: Durable chopping boards double as serving platters for cheese, fruit and picnic spreads. Our Wood Fibre Chopping Boards are lightweight and practical for outdoor entertaining.
  • Cooler Bags: Insulated Cooler Bags help keep food fresh while making transport easy for beach days, road trips and winter picnics alike.
  • Compostable Bin Liners: Keep your picnic tidy and make clean-up simple with our 8L Compostable Bin Liners, ideal for collecting food scraps and general waste while you're out and about.

3. Stay Warm & Comfortable

A cosy winter picnic is all about layering up and creating a comfortable space to relax. Pack extra blankets, cushions and warm clothing so everyone stays comfortable as the temperature drops.

A flask filled with tea, coffee or hot chocolate is always a good idea and adds a little extra warmth to your outdoor setup.

4. Winter Picnic Food Ideas & Activities

Winter picnics are perfect for slowing down and enjoying simple outdoor activities together. Depending on your location, you might enjoy:

  • Nature Walks: Explore nearby walking trails and take in the crisp winter scenery.
  • Bird Watching: Bring binoculars and spot local wildlife.
  • Outdoor Games: Frisbee, beach cricket or a scavenger hunt are always crowd favourites.
  • Storytelling & Board Games: Great for slower afternoons with family or friends.
  • Fire Pit Picnics: If permitted, a small fire pit can add warmth and create a cosy atmosphere for evening gatherings.

For food, think warming and easy-to-share meals like soups, toasties, baked treats, pasta salads or grazing platters packed with seasonal produce.

5. Leave No Trace

One of the most important parts of a sustainable picnic is making sure you leave your surroundings exactly as you found them.

Take all rubbish home with you, including food scraps and compostable items, and use reusable containers wherever possible. Packing a small bin liner for waste collection makes it easier to clean up responsibly before heading home.
