Popcorn is one of our favourite zero waste snacks. It's easy to make, perfect for lunches, the kids love it and let's face it, there's never any leftovers - a win all round!
As we head into another school year we asked ourselves: "what can we do to take this snack up a notch?" Don't get us wrong, we love a simple salt topping but variety is the spice of life!
To make your own popcorn all you need is some kernels from your local bulk food store, coconut oil for popping - if you're yet to try this it's a game changer - and a saucepan.
Add 1 tbsp coconut oil to the pan on medium heat and melt. Add 1/2 cup of kernels to the oil, pop on the lid (keep it slightly a jar so the popcorn stays crisp) and wait for the kernels to pop. You'll know the popcorn is ready when the popping slows down. Take off the heat and add one of our five favourite toppings below:
1. Gingerbread
- 1 1/2 tsp coconut or brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
2. Rosemary Salt
- 2 stalks of rosemary (leaves only, chopped finely)
- 1 tbsp salt
3. Chilli Cacao
- 1 tbsp cacao
- 1 tbsp coconut or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- pinch of chilli flakes (we'll let you decide how spicy you want it!)
4. Coconut Curry
- 1 tbsp shredded coconut
- 1/2 tsp curry powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
5. Salty and Sweet
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1/2 tbsp brown or coconut sugar
You can make these mixes, store them in jars in the pantry and add to your popcorn when you feel like it. Try one different flavour a week and keep them on rotation!
