I think it’s nice that you’ll have a reward system. I am not sure how other language learning applications work in terms of a reward system or if they have one, but I think that is one of the most important aspects to learning a language. People want to know if they’re doing it right.
Also good that you’re taking an approach that will ideally teach a person the whole language just using the app. Definitely a challenge, but it makes sense for someone to have a tool like that to be mobile. Especially if they may be in a Spanish speaking country, and may be learning as they go.

I like the scrolling bar at the top. It mimics a mobile sort of UI.
I like that this app is much more user driven and less “do this”.
The idea of there being a reward system is an important feature that I hope ends up shining through in your final product.

nice navigation bar at the top.
i appreciate how you are making the app include different ways of learning.. which is important when learning a language, it sounds fun.

Are you going to add a dictionary or some sort of quick reference?

Good research, the fact that you got a teacher is really helpful since you’re basically creating a digital teacher.
What sort of features will this app have? I.e. if they’re in a different country and they need to look up a word really quickly, will they have a dictionary? Maybe a common phrase dictionary for quick help?

How could you use the iPhones features to help aid your users? Microphone (speak into), camera, video camera, etc.
Have you looked at similar teaching aids that are not applications? Like Rosetta Stone and how people learn from that??
Good clean presentation, and a lot of research has gone into this.

It does seem like it would be a lot to ask someone to be driven enough to do it on their own, and I think that some kind of award system is a great idea.

The idea you have about finding social events that will help you learn the language is very strong. I think this is the biggest separation your application has with others. There is a program here at nc state where you can meet for lunch with someone who speaks another language; half the time you learn their language and the other half they learn yours. Maybe you could set up events like this.

the reward system is very smart. motivation with something like a mobile app is difficult and this will be most important to making this a success.
i think it is good that there are a lot of apps already out there [good and bad] for you to take notes from. those are some of the best things you can learn from.

as you talked about, if a person’s not driven to learn the language, an app isn’t going to help a whole lot, so, how can you play off the affordances of a mobile application so that it does something that another learning method wouldn’t do.
Maybe you could add something that helps connect the non-native speaker to a fluent speaker, a bridge that allows the learner to show something to a fluent speaker and get feed-back.

It appears at the end you suggest the app be used for ppl who have a self motivated desire to learn the language. Many ppl who are planning on traveling to spanish speaking countries would enjoy this app., also savvy students planning on studying aboard would love to use this app. The way in which you show the speaking interaction is important to how the person will understand the language they are trying to speak.
